A perfume that fades after an hour is frustrating. The good news: longevity is not just down to luck. It comes down to a few simple habits and to the concentration of the juice. Here is how to make your fragrance last from morning to evening.
Key takeaway: moisturise your skin, aim for the pulse points and choose a concentrated juice. Concentration matters, but the composition and how you apply it also affect the result. Discover all our extraits de parfum.
Why a perfume lasts more or less long
Before the tips, it helps to understand what affects longevity. Three factors matter most:
- Concentration: concentration can influence how present a perfume is, but it is not enough to predict how long it lasts.
- Your skin: the result can vary depending on your skin and its condition; compare your perfume in similar conditions.
- The scent family: fresh notes and citrus are volatile and evaporate quickly, while woods, ambers and orientals cling for hours.
Good news: you can act on all three. Here is how.
Our 7 tips to make your perfume last
1. Moisturise your skin before spraying
To prepare for a comfortable application, apply an unscented cream or lotion to the areas where you spray: let it absorb before applying your perfume and observe the result on your skin.
2. Aim for the pulse points
The neck, the inside of the wrists, the crook of the elbows and behind the ears are warmer: this warmth diffuses the perfume throughout the day. Two or three well-placed sprays are enough.
3. Never rub your wrists
The classic reflex (spray, then rub) changes the application conditions and makes comparison harder. Spray, then let it dry in the open air without touching.
4. Check compatibility before scenting a fabric
A fabric can hold a scent differently from skin. Follow the product instructions and test a hidden area first: some fabrics can stain. For hair, only use a product designed for that purpose.
5. Layer your scents ("layering")
Combine products from the same scent family: shower gel, cream, then perfume. Each layer reinforces the next and makes the fragrance more intense and longer-lasting.
6. Store your bottle properly
Light, heat and humidity are perfume's enemies. Avoid the bathroom: keep your bottles away from light, in a dry, temperate place, to preserve their strength.
7. Choose a more concentrated juice
An extrait de parfum can be a good option if you want presence. However, compare the composition and the result on your skin rather than the concentration alone.
The role of perfume concentration
Not all perfumes are equal when it comes to longevity. An eau de toilette contains few perfume oils: it is fresh but fades quickly. An extrait de parfum contains much more, for an intense and long-lasting trail.
At LEBONFLACON, our creations are extraits concentrated at 30%: expect more than 8 hours on the skin, and up to 72 hours on clothing. Discover all our extraits de parfum, or test first with our samples.
The scent families that last the longest
If longevity is your priority, go for the "heavier" families:
- Woody perfumes (cedar, sandalwood, patchouli): warm and tenacious.
- Oriental perfumes and ambers (resins, spices, vanilla): the champions of longevity.
- Conversely, citrus and aquatic notes stay lighter: perfect for daytime or summer, but they need reapplying. To choose them well, read our guide which perfume to choose for summer.
An example of a long-lasting trail? LE BON BACCARAT, an amber, woody extrait that stays present for much of the day.

Has your perfume disappeared, or do you just notice it less?
You may notice a fragrance less after wearing it for a while. That doesn't prove it has completely gone. Before reapplying, take a break and, if useful, ask someone close to you whether they can still smell it. Don't add more sprays just because the opening seems less present.

Frequently asked questions about perfume longevity
How long does an extrait de parfum last?
There is no single duration for all extraits. The composition, your skin and how you apply it all affect the result; test your chosen perfume at several times of day.
Is it better to spray on skin or on clothes?
The two complement each other. Skin (on the pulse points) diffuses warmth and brings the perfume to life; clothes extend the longevity, because fibres hold scents for a long time.
Why doesn't my perfume last on me?
Often because the skin is dry, because the juice is not very concentrated (eau de toilette), or because the fragrance belongs to a very light family. Moisturise your skin and choose a more concentrated extrait.
